I'm not literate in html, MySQL, php or any other letters of the alphabet unless it's bash as I'm strictly a Linux user.
I've been looking and trying for several months now to try to find a way to implement my idea for a dating site and have pretty much given up.
Anyway, here's my idea...
I've already seen a few suggestions posted such as distance and video chat which I agree with,, but I see very little that is unique and entertaining enough to keep people in the web site.
Being unique and remaining unique I think is key to being successful as the uniqueness alone is free advertising.
My suggestion is to add game rooms.
There are tons of free flash games available on the net that can be incorporated onto any website.
If a decent amount of these games were integrated into the various websites and set up so that members could invite others into a room to play a few rounds of billiards or whatever as well as chat at the same time, I firmly believe people would be more inclined to sign up and stay.
Pogo.com for instance is a gaming site that has this very set up.
It's also a very successful dating site.............
There really isn't much to do on a dating site except to do a search, maybe send a message and find something else to do until someone else signs up or a reply is received to a message sent.
Dating sites are all pretty much made from the same mold and the only difference in them is some are free and some aren't.
If we break the mold and give members their monies worth, we'll be much more successful in the end.

I see your point Windtalker.

This is one of the things that facebook does really well with the apps addons that 3rd parties can develop for them to extend the functionality of the site.

If you have the code to hand for the games it is fairly straightforward to add them to any site that you have with us.

The following steps should help.

1) Log in to your webmaster account area and click on 'Advanced editor' fromthe left side menu.

2) Click on 'Page Editor' from the sub-menu.

3) Once at the page editor select your site from the drop-down menu selection at the top of the page. You will then see a list of the current editable pages on your site.

4) You can now add extra pages to your site by typing the name that you want the name to have (minus any file extension) in to the 'Create new page content:' input box.
For example if you wanted to create a new page (php page) on the site called games.php you would simply enter: games in to the box and click on the 'create' button.

5) You will then arrive at the page editor area for that page. From here you can edit the page title and enter the page content in (x)HTML format (other formats as well but for now we will stick to (x)HTML).

6) Paste the code for your game into the 'Content' box on the screen and click on the 'update' button.

You will now be able to access the game by going to your site address followed by /games.php.
Don't forget that you will need to add a link to the games page(s) in your site menu so that visitors can access the page easily. If you need any help with that, please e-mail me and I will take you through the steps.

I almost forgot... You can also make the pages that the games are on available to Full Members only which would be an added incentive for them to upgrade their accounts.
If this is something that would interest you, please let me know.

All the best (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thx for the reply rob.
I can handle adding and setting up a page and yes, it would be for full members only.
The problem arises with the games that are available are just that,,,, games.
I would want things set up so that more than one person could enter a room, play a game and chat.
Folks of course would want privacy and the ability to invite someone/s into a room with them.
If two people or two couples are in a room, they would have an expectation of privacy as well.
There is the rub that is hindering me with my limited knowledge.

At the moment we don't have the facility to link users from our database in to games on the system but it is something that we can look in to.

I do see the benefit of having users stick around on sites for longer as it allows them to create an affinity with your brand and if the content is good then it will encourage brand loyalty and may also improve word of mouth referrals.

If you want to make a page 'full members only' just add the following piece of code to the top of the page you want it to apply to in the page editor:

CODE
<%FULLMEMBERONLY%>
